Understanding IRCC Government Fees

IRCC charges government processing fees for all immigration applications. These fees are set by the Government of Canada and updated periodically. They are non-refundable once submitted, even if the application is refused, withdrawn, or abandoned.

⚠️ Fees shown are government fees only. They do not include biometrics fees (paid separately), third-party fees such as medical exams (~$200–$400), language tests (IELTS/CELPIP ~$300+), educational credential assessments (~$200–$300), or professional consultation fees if you hire an RCIC or lawyer.

IRCC Government Fees Explained

IRCC charges government fees for processing immigration and citizenship applications. These are mandatory fees paid directly to the Government of Canada and are separate from any professional service fees you may pay to a consultant or lawyer. Government fees are generally non-refundable, even if your application is refused, though there are some exceptions.

Note: Fees are subject to change. Always confirm current fees on the official IRCC fees page before submitting your application.

When Are Fees Refunded?

IRCC may refund fees in limited situations: if you withdraw your application before it is sent to an officer, if you paid an incorrect fee, or if IRCC made an error. The right of permanent residence fee (RPRF) is refundable if your PR application is refused. Processing fees are generally not refunded if your application is refused.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I pay IRCC fees upfront or only if approved?

Most processing fees are paid upfront when you submit your application. The Right of Permanent Residence Fee (RPRF) for PR applications can be paid upfront or later — but it must be paid before your PR is finalized. If you are refused, processing fees are generally not refunded but the RPRF is.

Can I pay IRCC fees in my own currency?

IRCC fees are set in Canadian dollars (CAD). When you pay online through the IRCC portal, the payment is processed in CAD and your bank will convert it at their current exchange rate. There may be a foreign transaction fee from your bank.

Are there fees for children added to a PR application?

Yes. Dependent children under 22 have their own processing fee for PR applications. Currently, this is CAD $155 per dependent child. Children included in a family sponsorship application also have their own fees.
