TR to PR Canada 2026
Already in Canada on a work or study permit? Learn every pathway to convert your temporary status to permanent residence.
Read Guide →Your PR card is your proof of permanent resident status in Canada. It expires every 5 years and must be renewed to travel internationally and re-enter Canada. This guide explains exactly how to renew it, what documents you need, and what to do if yours has already expired.
A Permanent Resident (PR) card is a wallet-sized photo ID that proves you have permanent resident status in Canada. It is issued by IRCC and is valid for 5 years (or 1 year for new PRs in some cases). You need it to board a flight or cruise to Canada. Without a valid PR card, airlines and cruise lines will not allow you to board — even if your PR status is technically still valid.
Important: your PR status does not expire — only the card does. But an expired card creates serious travel problems, which is why renewal is essential.
To renew your PR card, you must:
The residency obligation is the biggest hurdle for many applicants. If you have spent significant time outside Canada, you may be below the 730-day threshold. In that case, renewing your PR card could trigger a residency determination — and in serious cases, your PR status could be at risk.
Count the number of days you were physically in Canada over the past 5 years (1,825 days). You need at least 730 of those days to have been inside Canada. Days partially spent in Canada count as full days. Time spent outside Canada generally does not count, with some exceptions:
Use IRCC's residency calculator to verify your count before applying.
IRCC strongly recommends applying online through your IRCC secure account. Paper applications are still accepted but take longer.
Go to IRCC's secure account portal and log in or create an account using your GCKey or a Sign-In Partner (bank account login).
Select "Apply to renew your PR card" from your account dashboard. Answer the eligibility questions to generate the correct form set.
Fill in your personal details, travel history for the past 5 years, and any residency obligation exceptions that apply to you. Be thorough and accurate — inconsistencies can delay processing or trigger a residency review.
Upload your photos, passport copy, and current PR card copy. Ensure all scans are clear and meet IRCC's resolution requirements.
Pay the CAD $50 government fee by credit card through the IRCC portal. Keep your receipt.
Submit your application. You will receive a confirmation number. IRCC will review your application and mail your new PR card to your address on file in Canada.
IRCC's current published processing time for PR card renewals is approximately 104 days from the date they receive a complete application, though this changes regularly. Check the IRCC processing times page for the current estimate before applying.
Because processing can take 3–4 months, do not wait until your card has only weeks left. Apply at least 6 months before expiry if possible, and certainly before booking any international travel.
An expired PR card does not mean you have lost PR status. You can still live and work in Canada. The issue arises when you try to travel internationally. Here is what to do depending on your situation:
A PRTD is an emergency travel document issued to permanent residents outside Canada who do not have a valid PR card. It is a single-use document and is not a replacement for your PR card — it only allows you to travel back to Canada once. To apply for a PRTD, you must:
PRTD processing can take several weeks depending on the visa office. If your trip back to Canada is urgent, contact the visa office directly to explain your situation.
The government fee for renewing a PR card is CAD $50 per person. This is paid online through your IRCC account at the time of application. There is no fee for a first-time PR card (issued when you become a PR). The fee is non-refundable if you withdraw your application after submission.
No. PR card renewals can only be submitted from inside Canada. If you are outside Canada with an expired PR card, you must apply for a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) at the nearest Canadian visa application centre to get back to Canada first.
IRCC's current processing time is approximately 104 days for a complete application. This can vary. Always check the current estimated time on the IRCC website. Apply at least 6 months before your card expires to avoid travel disruptions.
If you have not spent 730 days in Canada in the past 5 years, IRCC may determine that you have not maintained your residency obligation. This can result in a report being written against you, which could lead to a loss of PR status if upheld at a hearing. If you are in this situation, consider getting information from a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant (RCIC) before applying for renewal.
Yes. An expired PR card does not affect your right to work in Canada. You can continue working with your current employer and apply for new jobs — most employers check your PR status, not the card's expiry date. The card is mainly needed for international travel and re-entry into Canada.
Some Canadian institutions accept an expired PR card as ID for domestic purposes (banks, hospitals, etc.), but this varies by institution. For international travel, an expired PR card will not be accepted by airlines. Renew as soon as possible to avoid complications.
If your PR card is not delivered within the expected timeframe, contact IRCC through the web form in your IRCC account to report the issue. IRCC will investigate and may re-issue the card. Ensure your mailing address in your IRCC account is correct and up to date before submitting your application.
